Salicylic acid and Vitamin K: from trees to herbs to parasitic plants

Trees are rich resources of nature products that can be exploited for human use, from biomaterials to fragrances, to nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals.  Although their perennial growth habit and long generation time present challenges to basic research, trees as a study system can offer unique insights into molecular and evolutionary mechanisms not readily apparent based on studies with model systems. In this talk, I will share my journey from exploring a group of specialized metabolites called salicinoids in Populus, to investigating the growth tradeoff of salicylic acid-based defense against diseases in herbaceous plants, and more recently to a novel role of vitamin K—best known for its function in photosynthesis—in non-photosynthetic parasitic plants.
