Research expertise | Our lab centers on vegetation ecology and spatial information, with a particular focus on large-scale vegetation classification, vegetation distribution, environmental niche modeling, and island biogeography related to theoretical ecology. In recent years, we have focused on alpine vegetation ecology, conducting surveys through the standardized multi-summit approach of the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine environments (GLORIA). These efforts have involved monitoring 15 summits in five target regions of Taiwan. The primary objective is to analyze the changes in alpine vegetation dynamics due to climate change. Are species migrating upward due to temperature increases? Or does climate change-induced extreme weather, drought, and uneven rainfall impact the survival of alpine herbaceous plants? In the past, our lab has participated in many biodiversity surveys, covering areas such as the Central Mountain Range and the Syue Mountain Range, as well as various islands of Taiwan, including the Penghu Southern Four Islands, Mianhua Islet, and the offshore islands of the Matsu Islands Tern Protection Area, Dongsha island, and others. In recent years, we have also developed and promoted the biodiversity geographic citizen science platform "iNaturalist". Through the power of crowd sourcing, we aim to collect biodiversity data from various locations, promoting the mainstreaming of biodiversity. This involves bringing together local communities and NGOs to plan and conduct citizen science research, which can then be applied to biodiversity-related research or environmental education outreach. |
